Keith Lofstrom's Linux 560 page

Linux runs on Thinkpad 560s. Not very well; the BIOS is controlled by a program that runs under Windows. But there is a Linux program that allegedly does that.

I have a 560 133MHz running as my router. My wife has a 560X 233MHz that she uses for email and web surfing. We sat side by side tonight on the sofa reading email together. How romantic.

The maximum sized hard drive the 560 will support under any kind of windoze is 8.4GB; it will lock up if you install a 10GB. However, it will support any drive up to 137GB under Linux. If you want to run Windows, and want to use a bigger drive, install Linux, run Win4Lin, and run Windows 95 on top of that. Now you can have a 60GB 560. You can't run some things like DirectX games with the current version of Win4Lin, but otherwise the machine actually runs faster and more stably.

This page is new - I'll have more to say about Thinkpad 560s (like where to find repair parts and upgrades) later.
